Our vineyard is in a tiny village at 200m altitude in the western Aegean peninsula of İzmir. Situated on the south facing slopes of a valley renowned for being the windiest location in the peninsula. Surrounded by peaceful woods, sea wiews and antique ruins. There is also eagles, plenty of bird species, wild boars, badgers, foxes, squirrels and plenty of nice walks in the mountain. The village has a café and a small grocery shop. We're at 50 mn walk or 10 mn drive to the beach of Altınköy, 15 mn drive from the nearest large town named Urla and just 1 hour from İzmir.
We are locals of this village. We earn a living from our organic vineyards and sheeps. Actually what we really do is to give back to nature what we take from it. We feed our gardens with the manure we get from our sheeps and the gardens generously give us the beautiful fruits you can see in the photos. We grow red globe, alphons, and cabernet sauvignon grapes. Our grapes are sold in organic markets. We also make 'pekmez' (traditional grape molasses).
We are interested in self motivated people, happy with the simple life and to share in our daily work, food, recreation, experience, and stories. The work is very physical but also varied and suitable for different abilities. Experience and knowledge of the work types is an advantage but not obligatory. Working time will be 5-7 hours per day. Outdoor work is weather dependent but we usually start early to finish before it gets too warm.
The accommodation will be at home with us, well equipped (including sheets, pillow cases, towels, kitchen equipment etc), warm and comfortable with daily access to wifi, when it's chilly and in tents or the guesthouse in summer. With us you will eat well and healthy.
You will have easy access to endless mountain trails, and there's plenty of nice villages around to visit. For the more adventurous we are in the home of climbing and mountain biking. Our location is not off the beaten track, the village itself is quite lively in spring and summer and there are many lovely beaches within a few kms for swimming and sunbathing. There is a daily bus service from the village to the nearest local beaches. There are good hikes in the hills and along coastal paths.
Please come with shoes and clothes suitable for gardening. The continuous daily food production on the farm includes a large diversity of mixed vegetables and herbs, fruits in season, chickens for eggs and meat, milk and dairy products from our own sheeps. It is recommended to bring rubber gumboots, water proof coat, good shade hat, sunglasses, thick long work pants, working gloves (if you have soft hands), and long sleeved cotton work shirts (to avoid sun burn).
WARNING: Mr. Erdoğan expects volunteers to be tetanus vaccinated beforehand, as a safety precaution. He has an intensive work schedule (includes waking up very early in the morning). Please apply only if these conditions are OK for you.
